Head Circumference
Wrap the tape around your head — across the front hairline, above the ears, and around the lowest point of the nape. Keep it snug but not tight.
Fit & Sizing
A wig that fits disappears into your life; one that doesn't never lets you forget it. Six simple measurements — taken at home in about five minutes — tell us everything we need to size your piece precisely.
Measure at home
All you need is a soft measuring tape and a mirror. Keep your hair flat — braided or pinned the way you would wear it under a wig — and record each measurement in inches.
Wrap the tape around your head — across the front hairline, above the ears, and around the lowest point of the nape. Keep it snug but not tight.
Run the tape from the center of your front hairline straight over the crown down to where your hairline ends at the nape.
Measure from the top of one ear, along your front hairline across the forehead, to the top of the other ear.
Place the tape at the top of one ear and bring it straight up over the crown to the top of the other ear.
Measure from one temple, around the back of your head, to the other temple, keeping the tape level above the ears.
Measure the width of your hairline across the nape, at the lowest point where your hair growth ends.
Standard cap sizes
Compare your six measurements against the standard cap sizes below. When measurements point to different sizes, let your head circumference lead — it matters most for fit.
| Measurement | Petite | Average | Large |
|---|---|---|---|
| Head Circumference | 21" · 53.5 cm | 21.5" · 54.5 cm | 22.5" · 57 cm |
| Front to Nape | 13.5" · 34.5 cm | 14.25" · 36 cm | 14.75" · 37.5 cm |
| Ear to Ear Across Forehead | 11.25" · 28.5 cm | 11.5" · 29 cm | 12" · 30.5 cm |
| Ear to Ear Over Top | 12" · 30.5 cm | 13" · 33 cm | 13.5" · 34.5 cm |
| Temple to Temple Around Back | 14" · 35.5 cm | 14.5" · 37 cm | 15" · 38 cm |
| Nape of Neck | 5" · 12.5 cm | 5.75" · 14.5 cm | 6.5" · 16.5 cm |
Roughly 90–95% of women fit an Average cap. If your head circumference lands between 21¼" and 22¼", Average will almost certainly fit you comfortably.
Always choose the larger size — every quality cap has adjustable tabs at the nape with up to an inch of give, so a slightly larger cap tightens to a secure fit. A too-small cap cannot be stretched.
Standard sizes apply to ready-to-wear pieces. Every Dorin custom and medical wig is built to your six exact measurements — not to Petite, Average, or Large.
Sizing questions
About 90–95% of women wear an Average cap — a head circumference of roughly 21¼ to 22¼ inches. Petite and Large caps cover the rest. That's why most ready-to-wear wigs are made in Average: if your measurements are close to the middle of the chart, an Average cap with the nape tabs adjusted will almost always fit well.
Choose the larger size. Quality wig caps have adjustable tabs at the nape that tighten the fit by up to an inch, so a slightly roomy cap becomes secure — but a too-small cap will press, slip backward, and cause headaches. If different measurements point to different sizes, prioritize your head circumference, then front-to-nape.
No — and that's the point. Every Dorin custom and medical piece is made to your exact six measurements, not to a standard size. The chart on this page applies to ready-to-wear pieces. For a custom or medical fitting, we take your measurements in the atelier and build the cap to match your scalp precisely — including your natural hairline.
Measure with your hair as flat as it will be under the wig — braided, wrapped, or pinned close to your head. If you'll wear a wig cap, put it on before measuring. Measuring over loose or voluminous hair adds up to an inch of error, which is the difference between two cap sizes.
