Common questions
Medical wigs, answered.
What makes a wig a medical wig?
A medical wig — clinically a cranial prosthesis — is a full-scalp piece fitted for hair loss from a diagnosed condition: chemotherapy, alopecia, radiation, thyroid disease, or hormonal loss. The piece can look like any fine wig; the difference is scalp-sensitive cap construction, secure hold without adhesive, timing planned around treatment, and paperwork written in the language your insurer needs. The full medical wig guide is here.
Are these covered by insurance or FSA/HSA?
Often. Many private plans reimburse a prescribed cranial prosthesis (HCPCS A9282, or S8095 on some plans) even though they will not reimburse a "wig." FSA and HSA funds qualify independently of insurance. We provide the itemized receipt with the correct code after every medical fitting. See the full coverage guide.
Do I need a prescription to come in?
No — you can book a consultation and be fitted without one. A prescription matters only if you want insurance, FSA or HSA money involved, and it needs to read "cranial prosthesis due to [your diagnosis]" — "wig" prescriptions are routinely rejected. If your doctor is unsure what to write, we give you the exact wording.
Will it be comfortable on a sensitive scalp?
That is what these caps are built for. Linings are soft and breathable, hold comes from precise measurement rather than tension or adhesive, and there are no clips or combs digging into a bare scalp. Every piece is 100% human hair, which breathes better against sensitive skin than synthetic and lasts two to five years with care.
Should I come in before or during treatment?
Many clients prefer to be fitted before significant hair loss begins, so we can match their natural color and texture accurately from their own hair. We also fit clients mid-treatment and after. You are welcome at any stage — and you are welcome to bring whoever makes you feel comfortable.
What does the consultation cost?
It is complimentary — no charge, no obligation, and no pressure to decide anything at the appointment. Dorin is a private, women-only studio, and your consultation is you (and anyone you bring) and your stylist.
